COLBA Non-Profit Profile: Chicago’s Midtown Educational Foundation
A Model for Enriching Chicago’s Disadvantaged Youth
COLBA is proud to support the non-profit groups in which its members are active, and as a part of that outreach, COLBA has elected to support Chicago’s Midtown Educational Foundation (MEF).
MEF helps inner-city kids to succeed in school and in life, through after-school enrichment programs that integrate academics with virtues. Programs operate at two educational centers in Chicago that the Foundation supports: the Midtown Center for boys and Metro Achievement Center for girls.
The programs are volunteer-driven with 17 volunteers for every one MEF staff member. And the programs are overwhelmingly successful: MEF students enter college at nearly five times the rate of their inner-city peers around the country, and for the 13th consecutive year (as of 2013), 100% of MEF’s high school seniors have graduated from high school and entered college.
MEF operates exclusively through private funding from corporations, foundations, and generous individual donors. MEF’s funders often comment that they are motivated to support MEF in part from a desire to foster an educated, motivated future workforce from Chicago’s inner-city youth.
