Member Highlight: Pat Philbin

How long have you been a member of COLBA?

Approximately 7 or 8 years, on the Board for the last 3+ years (or is it 4?).

What do you appreciate most about COLBA membership?

It gives me a chance to run into industry friends that I may not get to see as often. The events are relevant and fun to attend, and I love the “expert” panels.

Tell us about your CRE background:

I just got lucky to be introduced to this business in 1981 and worked for the first 16 years for Metropolitan Structures, the developer of Illinois Center. That was in the day when owners held onto buildings for a long-term. When the market changed and buildings we “flipped” after a few year hold, I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunities to work with some marvelous people at Tishman Speyer, Cushman & Wakefield, Prentiss Properties, Shorentein and now JF McKinney/Cushman & Wakefield (again).

What is your advice for young brokers starting out in the industry?

Talk to your peers, never stop making calls and sharing information. Relationships, being truthful and having integrity will win you business. Its been pretty cool to see young brokers that have worked their tails off become successful.

What do you expect to see in the CRE market for 2016?

I believe that the market for Class A CBD space will remain tight through 2016, but I believe there might be a bit of a headwind coming in 2017 for landlords and owners. Get deals done this year.

What do you hope to accomplish as a COLBA Board Member?

I enjoy the philanthropic nature of the organization and the impressive charitable background of many of the Board members.

What are some of your philanthropic associations?

I have been an active fundraiser in the past for many events, including Breast Cancer Awareness, Leukemia and Lymphoma Research, Autism Awareness, American Heart Association, City of Hope (REACH Board for the past 3 years), Pediatric Cancer Research, and Lou Gehrig/ ALS Foundation.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I have been a youth and high school hockey coach for the past 18 years, and I still play at a couple of times a week. Summer months I love working in the yard, landscaping and DIY jobs. Winter months, besides hockey, I like to ski.

If you weren’t in Real Estate what would you like to be doing…

Something that would involve being outdoors, maybe at a landscaping company, or just cutting lawns (ie Forrest Gump).

Most folks don’t know that I am…

Not really related to Jim Philbin…Just kidding. That I am better than Audrey at ping pong? That I am 1 of 8 kids maybe? A CPA by trade? A Capricorn?

Thanks Auds!
